The Chief Constable of West Midlands Police has apologised to the mother of Birmingham dad Lloyd Butler who died while suffering a heart attack in police custody.
Chris Sims offered his condolences to Lloyd Butler’s mother, Janet, following a damning Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) report which found that officers and staff “disregarded human decency” in their treatment of Mr Butler.
The 39 year-old dad-of-two, from Tile Cross, died after he was arrested for appearing drunk and incapable on August 4, 2010.
Officers at Stetchford Police Station were caught on CCTV laughing, joking and swearing while they were supposed to be keeping a “constant watch” on him.
At the Strategic Police and Crime Board meeting yesterday (November 4), attended by Mrs Butler, Chief Constable Sims said: “There is nothing more important than looking after people in our custody.
“I would like to extend my personal condolences to Lloyd Butler’s mother.”
