Death prompts new call for Yarl’s Wood Immigration Centre to be closed

A charity against the detention of refugee women in the UK believes Yarl’s Wood Immigration Centre should be closed down following the death of a woman there earlier this year.
Christine Case came into the removal centre in Clapham on March 20 after problems arose with her immigration status but tragedy struck 10 days later when she died of a sudden blockage to her lungs.
Her family believe she had been having chest pain while detained but Professor Sebastian Lucas, a consultant pathologist in London who carried out her autopsy, said this was not connected.
Speaking at an inquest into the 40-year-old’s death at Ampthill Coroner’s Court on Wednesday, Professor Lucas said: “All five arteries to her lungs were blocked, it would have happened very quickly before her death.”
He concluded her cause of death was a massive pulmonary thromboembolism.
