The story behind the new stamp for John Archer, Black Mayor of Battersea in 1906
(April 29, 2013) Nubian Jak ripped off ! The story behind the new stamp for John Archer, Black Mayor of Battersea in 1906 Last week Tuesday Nubian Jak was contacted by a TV film maker asking if he knew about a 'John Archer stamp' ? Jak told him he had been contacted by the Royal Mint and the Tate Gallery in 2011 and last year, respectively, who were looking for an image for John Archer. Jak sent them them a PDF cover of his book and put them in touch with the artist who drew it. THAT IMAGE BECAME THE STAMP ! It would have been nice for Jak to have got an acknowledgement in the publicity. What he got was a groveling apology for the omission. John Archer is finally getting his due for becoming London's first black mayor; but how and why has the pioneering work of the man who has been promoting black history with plaques and books, including one for John Archer , been so studiously ignored ? The very work he's produced has been taken advantage of but he gets no credit ?! Nubian Jak has funded many of the plaques from his own pocket and literally gone hungry to tell the hidden stories of Frederick Douglas, Frank Crichlow, Walter Tull and more. He deserves better. www.nubianjak.com |
