Subject: Email sent to Channel 4 regarding Top Bwoy 11.11.11

To Channel 4,

I feel that the programme "Top Boy" spent far too much time glamorising violence and gangsterism. Not enough time was spent dealing the aftermath of gang violence and murder.

‎1.No arrests were ever made

2. Nobody was ever questioned by the police especially as the police would
of guessed who the suspects were

3. Nobody was stopped and searched

4. Nobody was encouraged to say anything to the police.

5. No "witness protection program" was mentioned

6. After a shooting there was no demonstration of a "section 60". Plenty
young and old people still have no idea what it is.

7. There was no demonstration of a "joint enterprise" arrest. There are
still plenty of young and old people who have no clue what it is and its consequences.

There were hardly any police whatsoever in the program despite the level and amount of violence used.

Even though the criminals had to look over their shoulder at every corner, this program, in my opinion , showed the CRIME DOES PAY!

The worst part of the whole show for me was that the ONE positive man, Leon, was murdered with no arrests, no funeral and no show of real grief from his community, family and friends.

Those who are left behind after a crime has been committed whether it be robbery, beatings, threats or death are NOT having their story shared. Far too much emphasis is on the criminals and perpetrators of violence. One of the few positives in the show was the highlight of mental health issues that
affect families.

I was very reluctant to watch "Top Boy" in the first place as I knew full well that the gangs and the violence would be at the forefront, but for me to share my views with others around me who had seen it, including school children, I had to watch it, and I did so with my secondary school aged children on 4oD so that we could discuss issues brought up in the programme.

Once again Channel for has missed an opportunity to show the positive things in the UK Black community and have highlighted the far too much publicised minority negative side. We did notice that "Top Boy" did include an oriental and white English and Irish elements in the higher end of the drugs trade.

It would of been interesting if the Arab involvement was included and also that of other south Asian communities and also that of middle class families in the leafy suburbs or in the city.

Most people are aware of the negative issues surrounding gangs and street crime and in my opinion it is NOT necessary for this and other programmes to be so graphic with the crime if there is no balance with being so graphic about the grief and aftermath. The programme didn't exactly encourage the
public to stand up and speak out about what is happening in their local area or where they live, work or visit.
