There has been significant flooding in Mahaut this morning. This has forced the closure of the Health Center in the community.

One lady, Sylvia Augustine, was trapped on the Health Center premises and had to be carried out by a DNO reporter with the help of a colleague. Eyes screening for diabetics at the facility has been cancelled.

The water level is reportedly still rising, houses are being flooded and are on the verge of being washed away.

The flooding is due to heavy rainfall overnight.

Meanwhile in Layou traffic flow is at a virtual standstill because of flooding in the area.

Motorists and pedestrians in the area are urged to exercise extreme precaution.

The Layou Valley gained national attention when the Mattieu Dam collapsed earlier this year flooding the area.

Heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Storm Ophelia has been causing widespread flooding across the island.

The Dominica Meteorological Office reports that Ophelia is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of two to four inches mainly over the northern Leeward and Windward Islands.

Rainfall and thunderstorm activity is expected to continue to affect Dominica today.

Presently the Canefield Airport is flooded.

Police and fire officials are on the ground in Canefield and Massacre assisting those in need and warning pedestrian not to cross the bridges in the communities but some have not heeded the warning.

Dominica News Online was able to gather photos from different location across Dominica. We are also getting more photographs from our reporters and from our readers, so please come back for more.
