The most authentic thing about us...

is our capacity to create, to overcome, to endure, to transform, to love and to be greater than our suffering

The question is not whether we can afford to invest in every child; It is whether we can afford not to.
Jesse Owens (1913-1980)
The battles that count aren't the ones for gold medals.
The struggles within yourself—the invisible, inevitable battles inside all of us—that's where it's at.

Help Needed for Heritage Today Magazine

(August 10, 2012)

When the Olympic board tried to freeze out The Voice newspaper it was heartening to see how swiftly the black community joined hands and defended and supported The Voice, forcing the powers that be to retract their decision.
It showed something that many no longer believed, our actions proved that not only do we care about our people but that we CAN do something to help ourselves sustain something that we feel we NEED. It is this kind of outpouring that needs to be ignited for our Black History Month magazine - Black Heritage Today.
Without our help, it is doubtful that Black Heritage Today will be published this year. (I for one would miss it). The magazine receives no outside funding. Barbara (the publisher) to date has used her own finances to ensure we enjoy this publication annually.
This morning Barbara called me seeking support not only from me but the rest of our community. She knew that no matter what she HAD to produce this annual, uplifting and inspirational publication. It needs to be written, it needs to go to print, and it needs to be distributed throughout London and UK-wide.
Please see below & let Barbara know ASAP if there is anything on the list that you could offer to do & or circulate this to your network & together I have faith that we can ensure Black Heritage Today  survives to serve all of us for another year.
Download a copy of the magazine below, check out the website. Volunteers are needed in all areas below:
  • Writers – touching on subjects/issues related to People of African Descent
  • Do you have a story or someone you would like to big-up for what they have achieved in life? Nominate them for a full page feature.
  • People to help proof-read the content
  • People who may wish to Subscribe
  • People who may wish to advertise in their publication and their online business directory (£50).
  • Anyone who may wish to have a bigger space – and still receive a great deal
  • People who can help format the BHM Listings
